Things You’ll Need:
- A functioning computer with an Internet connection.
- A Hotmail or MSN email account already set up with your username and password.
Using MSN Windows Hotmail Basic Email Functions
Step 1:
Go to www.hotmail.com and enter your username and password in the box on the side.
Step 2:
Click on Inbox on the left hand side of your screen. If it has a number in bold after it, for example, that is the number of unread emails you have in your box.
Step 3:
Click either on the sender or message column to open up the email.
Step 4:
Once you are in the email, you can click reply on the top of the screen and type a message.
Step 5:
If you are finished with the message and do not want to save it, you can click on the delete, by the red "X" towards the top of your screen.
Step 6:
In the case you do wish to save the email for later reference, you can create a folder to save it in. This will help you find it later and organize your messages better. There is no limit to the folders you can create.
Step 7:
To create a folder, click, new and hit the drop down box, select folder and give it a meaningful name.
Step 8:
To place the message in there you would like to save, simply check the box next to the message, click move to on the top, and select the folder that you just created. The message is easily retrieved by clicking on that folder to the left of your screen for future use.
Step 9:
You can also forward (FW:) the message when you are inside of it by clicking "forward."
Step 10:
If you get spam or junk mail, check the box next to the message and click Junk on the top. It will go into the trash to be deleted later on. MSN will keep track of this on what's called a "block senders list" so they do not continue to email you.
Step 11:
To create a new message from scratch, click new and the boxes should come up.
Step 12:
Type in an email address. Subject is optional, then jump down and start typing the message in the space provided. It looks and functions like a mini-word processor. Feel free to play around with the various fonts, colors, styles and functions.
Step 13:
Click the "send" button in the upper left hand corner when you are ready to send the email.
Step 14:
If you want to add contacts (addresses) that you will use frequently, click contacts on the left hand side, click new and fill in the information as needed. An email address and name are required. Click "save" in the upper left hand corner after each contact you add and repeat as necessary.
Step 15:
If you would like to empty the trash (where the emails you delete end up), simply select "deleted" (looks like a recycle bin) on the left of your screen, click the box on the top to select all the emails, and click delete on the top of the screen again.
